Kinzua Bridge State Park First Day Walk
Did you make a New Year’s Resolution to get outside more or to try to be more healthy? Come to Kinzua Bridge State Park on Sunday, January 1 at 1:30 p.m. and walk with the park naturalist on the General Kane Trail. It’s an easy one mile loop. Dress for the weather. Meet at Pavilion #1. KCH Winter Walking Club at the Middle School
Kane Community Hospital Home Health Care has paved the way for the Winter Walking Club at Kane Middle School on Hemlock Avenue.
The Club, launched by KCH in cooperation with Kane Area Middle School runs through the end of March and offers a free, safe walking venue during the winter months. Walking is a great exercise and opportunity to catch up with friends and family.
The Middle School hallways are available for walking, Monday through Friday, 5-8 p.m., on the days the school is open. Students return to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Walking is not permitted in the Elementary School halls.
Please enter door #7, the main gym door. There will be chairs and a rug to change into walking shoes.
A KCH Home Health Care Nurse attends the first Wednesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. for blood pressure checks and to answer your health and fitness questions.

Kane Area Community Center to Offer Free Class About Fitness Equipment
The Kane Area Community Center will be holding classes to teach the public how to use the fitness equipment in the fitness center. The classes will be held on Saturday, January 7th. A class for females will be taught by Cory Darr and will begin at 10AM. A class for males will take place at 2PM and will be taught by Kane Area Community Center Board member Tom Thiry.
All who attend will have their names submitted to a drawing for a three month Kane Area Community Center fitness center membership. Attendees must register by calling the Kane Area Community Center at 814-837-9472 or the Kane Area Development Center at 814-837-6565.

Classic Holiday Cartoons at Friends' Memorial Public Library
Friends’ Memorial Public Library in Kane will screen two animated classics on Thursday, December 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. What holiday would be complete without Dr. Seuss’ animated timeless tale of the mean-spirited Grinch and his feeble attempt to steal the yuletide celebration of Whoville? Boris Karloff narrates this classic animated confection that’s the perfect festival of fun. Following is the television classic featuring the Peanuts characters in the story of Charlie Brown's problematic efforts to mount a school Christmas pageant. Everybody's on board: Lucy, Snoopy, Schroeder, Pig-Pen, but the biggest impression is surely made by Linus, as he explains the true meaning of Christmas. BOXWOOD TREE CENTERPIECE CLASS
December 14th beginning at 7:00pm
Come to Hamlin Memorial Library in Smethport to learn how to make a beautiful 18”-24” boxwood centerpiece shaped like a tree! Candy Tingley from Graham’s Florist will provide all the materials, instructions, and “fix-it” skills to be sure you leave with a centerpiece to be envied.
Register by calling the library at 887-9262 to reserve your space. A $30 fee includes the base, boxwood branches, bows and decorations. Festive snacks will be served to bring out the holiday spirit!
Friends’ Memorial Public Library Open House

Alfred University singers, visiting artists to present ‘Songs for Sawyer’ seasonal music
The Alfred University Chorus and Chamber Singers will be joined by award-winning hammer dulcimer player Dan Duggan (of the Susquehanna String Band) and his wife, Peggy Lynn for an afternoon of traditional music for the season, Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. in the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church.
Luanne Crosby, AU professor of voice and chorus, will direct the singers. The AU String Orchestra, under the direction of David Thurkins, will accompany them.
The musicians will ready the audience for the holiday season with selections including “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holtz and “Fantasia on Greensleeves” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Dan and Peggy will join voices with the University Chorus and Chamber Singers to present original tunes for the holidays accompanied by hammer dulcimer, guitar, and piano.
The title of the concert, “Songs for Sawyer,” was selected shortly after the groups heard the news that Sawyer McFadden, son of Mark and Laurie McFadden of Alfred, had been diagnosed with leukemia. So, following the lead of “Stacks for Sawyer,” (a recent pancake breakfast fundraiser) the musicians will be accepting a free will offering at the end of the concert to help with the family’s expenses.
But, says Crosby, “the title goes beyond raising funds. Music has a wonderful power to heal and with more than 100 voices raised in song, the message of the final song “Harvest Hope,” should leave us all with a burst of positive energy and hope for the future.”
